Puckett Machinery Company Breaks Ground on New Headquarters in Flowood

05/30/2012

JACKSON, MS – Puckett Machinery Company, the Caterpillar heavy equipment, rental services, and engine dealer for central and southern Mississippi, announces the ground breaking of its new corporate headquarters in Flowood, which will be located off Flowood Drive, approximately two miles north of I-20. Phase I of the new facility will consist of approximately 150,000 square feet under roof and will include Puckett’s corporate offices, central parts distribution warehouse, central component rebuild center, and Jackson branch Parts, Service, and Sales departments. Approximately 200 employees will relocate from Highway 80 when the new facility opens next fall.

The new campus is designed to be customer friendly, highly efficient, and will accommodate future expansion. The efficiencies it delivers will enhance Puckett Machinery’s ability to provide the world class product support for which Caterpillar and its dealers are known. Says Richard Puckett, Chairman / CEO, “We will certainly miss Highway 80, which has been home to the corporate headquarters for the Caterpillar dealership for central and southern Mississippi since 1941.

During that time, Puckett Machinery Company has grown; customer expectations have increased and our services and capabilities have expanded in order to meet these increased expectations. In recent years we have simply outgrown our existing facilities and/or they have outlived their useful lives and it became clear to us that it is time for our company to make significant facility investments in order to provide the services our customers expect. We began a project evaluating two scenarios: redeveloping our existing campus or relocating to a new site and starting anew. As we evaluated redeveloping our existing campus we continued to be challenged with a variety of land, access, and infrastructure limitations that we were unable to resolve and this essentially eliminated the option of redeveloping our existing campus.

We value our relationship with Hinds County and the City of Jackson and have maintained an excellent one with both for many years. However, our company has now reached a point where to continue to serve our customers at the highest level means making some tough decisions. Relocating our corporate headquarters to Flowood will give us the much-needed space, vehicle access, building design, and customer and employee safety that we must have as we move our company forward.

We have found the climate in Flowood to be welcoming and very friendly toward the business community. The decision to move our corporate headquarters to Flowood came after months of studying many site locations. After reviewing the advantages and disadvantages of the various potential sites, we chose Flowood as the best fit for Puckett Machinery. Flowood city officials, led by Mayor Rhodes, have been very progressive and supportive of our desire to relocate to their city.” Hastings Puckett, President, adds, “We’re building this new facility and campus with the expectation it will serve Puckett Machinery for the next three generations and thus the location of the facility is very important. It is critical to us to locate in an area with a low crime rate, a business-friendly local government, a fair tax code, and a fair legal system. We feel the City of Flowood and Rankin County best meet these criteria. Further, the actual site needs to be convenient to our customers and provide excellent accessibility for large truck traffic. The site we selected on Flowood Drive meets all of these requirements.

This new facility will allow us to serve our customers at an entirely new level, and allow us to continue providing the finest equipment and support solutions available for many years to come. Additionally, the new facility will allow us to provide our existing employees with an exceptional work environment and assist our efforts in attracting and retaining the best people in the industry.”

Richard Puckett went on to say, “We now look forward with enthusiasm to developing and maintaining a very long term relationship with Rankin County and the City of Flowood. We feel very confident in our decision to locate our corporate headquarters there and are excited about our future in Flowood.”

Hemphill Construction Company of Florence, MS has been awarded the contract for the site work which will begin immediately. Cooke Douglass, Farr, Lemons PA (CDFL) is the architect and WG Yates & Sons Construction, headquartered in Philadelphia, MS, will be the Construction Manager for the new facility. CDFL and WG Yates & Sons are working closely together to finalize the building plans with building construction scheduled to begin in August.

Puckett Machinery’s new Flowood facility is scheduled to be completed in early fall of 2013.

Following the move, Puckett Machinery’s existing facility on Highway 80 will become the new corporate headquarters for Puckett Power Systems, a division of Puckett Machinery Company. Puckett Power Systems offers custom power solutions for electric power generation, industrial, petroleum, marine, and truck applications. Comments Rick Apple, Vice President, “We’re excited about moving our Power Systems’ headquarters into the large Highway 80 facility. Puckett Power Systems will be able to take excellent advantage of the existing facilities and I’m confident this will be a major step toward our company’s continued growth.”
